Throughout his near 20-year career he’s developed genuine friendships with many of his musical idols, but above all Ben challenges himself. Harper’s musical endeavors are about as predictable as [lastfm]Jack White’s[/lastfm]. Just last year, he released an album and toured with side-project, [lastfm]Fistful of Mercy[/lastfm] — a collaboration with [lastfm]Dhani Harrison[/lastfm] (yes, George was his dad) and [lastfm]Joseph Arthur[/lastfm].

On his 10th studio album, Ben rejoins his [lastfm]Relentless7[/lastfm] bandmates and extends invitations to [lastfm]Ringo Starr[/lastfm] (who drums on two tracks) and [lastfm]Jackson Browne[/lastfm] (who supplies additional vocals and his L.A. recording studio.)

Even with all that star power, Give Till It’s Gone will sound is as comfortable as ever for any long-time fan. It’s a back to basics record alternating between Harper’s patented pumping rockers and extended eclectic jammy ballads. The sense of nostalgia probably stems as much from the songwriting (simple, straightforward and pure) as it does the production.

With 16 albums now under his belt and nearly 1/3 of them live, Ben Harper’s music is as synonymous with summertime as [lastfm]Dave Matthews Band[/lastfm]. Harper has always sounded best live, and the main positive of this new album is the authentic feel it has. As the album closing rocker, “Do It For You, Do It For Us” comes grinding to a halt, you can almost hear the crowd roaring its approval. Harper’s trademarked fuzzy wailing slide guitar and lap steel are back in full force as demonstrated on the first single from the album “Rock N’ Roll Is Free”, a blistering bluesy rock number that hits you full force.

Looser and a bit lighter than ’09’s White Lies for Dark Times, Give Till It’s Gone dishes out the pure summertime joy.
