Tori Kelly is no stranger to reality TV competitions. She appeared on American Idol‘s ninth season, but failed to break into the upper echelon spots. Even though Christina Grimmie went farther when she appeared on The Voice, it appears her death impacted Kelly on several levels because of the similar paths they traveled. Kelly shared her feelings in a new song “Blink of an Eye” yesterday (July 10).
Sitting in a dark room and playing an acoustic guitar, Kelly mourns Grimmie’s death. “I can’t help but think who you would be/ If you’d just had the chance to turn 23/ It’s 2 a.m., still don’t believe you’re gone/ And the world keeps spinning on,” she sings.
On YouTube, Kelly wrote, “this song was written for christina grimmie after she passed away tragically. i needed to write this song. thank you to my good friend, zac poor, who was brave enough to take on the challenge of writing it with me. my heart was & is still so heavy when i think of her not being with us. however, i am still comforted knowing that i’ll get to see her again someday in heaven. my prayers go out to her family & loved ones.”
She added that even though she penned the song for Grimmie specifically, she feels it applies to the “pain & brokenness in the world today.”
