Fox's 'Masked Singer' Draws A Strong Audience For Debut

January 8, 2019

NEW YORK (AP/Star 100.7) — Fox hoped to use a week when there wasn't much else on broadcast television besides football to draw attention to its new competition "The Masked Singer." It proved to be a sound strategy.

The Nielsen company said that 9.37 million people watched the series debut last Wednesday. That was the biggest audience to watch the premiere of any unscripted show on television in more than seven years.

Most promisingly for Fox, which is starved for a hit, more precise statistics illustrated a strong buzz for the show. Its ratings grew in the show's second half hour, meaning people were attracted to the program through word of mouth.

While Fox is looking for something other than football to generate ratings, it was a football star that appeared on the debut episode.

A bigger test for "The Masked Singer" is coming this week, when there's more competition among Fox's rivals.
